Social Movements and Social Thought in Modern and Contemporary Japan
I aim to reconstruct the history of social movements using intellectual history as method. Postwar historiography's depiction of the history of social movements was fragmented along ideological and national lines. The recent decline of the ideological perspective on history and the new availability of materials at overseas archives calls for a reassessment of the documentary situation in order to construct a new image of the history of social movements. My specific objectives are: (1) To create a comprehensive, verifiable depiction of the history of social movements, which has hitherto been depicted only in a fragmentary fashion; (2) To create a depiction of the history of social movements which transcends borders, drawing on official documents and other materials inside and outside Japan; and (3) Through this reconstruction of the history of social movements, to reconsider the nature of historiography itself.
