History of East Asian Buddhist art

My research will be a multifaceted exploration of Buddhist art in East Asia, historically tracing various aspects of its reception and development chiefly by decoding meanings inherent in form.  The project's main focus will be carvings, pictures, and craftworks made in China from the Six Dynasties, Sui and Tang period to the Song period, but I will also always consider the contemporary situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Japan, striving to offer observations with depth.  The facts that Buddhist art is religious art and Buddhism itself arrived in East Asia from elsewhere require particular attention if this is to be achieved, and I also hope to use both artifacts and documentary sources to explore the correlations between the activities of the Buddhist faithful and the creation of this art and the reception and inheritance of Indian and Central Asian elements in East Asian Buddhism.
