Socio-Economic and Environmental History of Modern Japan
How have human production and consumption activities altered the natural environment, and what effects has all this had on humans?
This research pursues the above question in relation to modern Japan, focusing on politics, society and industrial technology as well as economy.
For the time being, I would like to proceed with the construction of a modern and contemporary Japanese historical image from the perspective of the development and utilization of energy sources such as hydropower, fossil fuels, and nuclear power.
Japan has caused (and still causes) a lot of pollution, while it was the first country to achieve the “East Asian Miracle”, a major economic change in the second half of the 20th century, as high economic growth in the 1950–70s.
Revisiting this experience could provide a range of useful insights into how modern society can deal with global environmental problems.
