Research on the history of Chinese painting
This research focuses on the history of Chinese painting, which has long been considered one of the most influential aesthetic criteria in East Asia. The approach used involves not only analyzing subjects and descriptions of the paintings, or the painters and schools related to them &emdash;as found in the orthodox discipline of art history&emdash; but also examines their acquisition and connoisseurship, provenance and reputation in the political and social context of Chinese history in order to help comprehend the true essence of Chinese culture. It also focuses on specific historical periods, such as the various dynasties, including modern China, the Late Qing and early Republican era, and on certain places outside mainland China, such as the way in which Japan expressed admiration for Chinese art works over a long period of time. Furthermore, this research explores the significance of studying Chinese paintings in Japan, through the lens of calligraphy, poetry and literature, and other related art forms.
