Exploring Chinese Culture through Historical Archaeology

The capital cities and imperial mausoleums constructed by Chinese successive dynasties were established and expanded on Confucian principles in the Han dynasty, with reference to the preceding Qin dynasty.  Buddhism, also transmitted to China during the Han dynasty, fused with Chinese traditional culture and thought to create a unique Buddhist culture.  Before the Tang dynasty, both of these would be propagated across East Asia, playing a major role in processes of state formation.  My research has three major pillars: research on the construction of capital cities based on analysis of tiles and other archaeological materials, research on the construction of imperial mausoleums and funerary rites, and research on the establishment and propagation of Buddhist temples.  By uniting these three areas, I aim to develop a multifaceted account of the processes by which Chinese culture developed and was propagated across East Asia.
