Literary theory in medieval and early modern China

Chinese medieval and early modern literary theory developed into the modern period along lines distinct from counterparts in the West and elsewhere.  I intent to elucidate aspects of this theory using works of criticism and other texts alongside works of classical literature.  In concrete terms, with my focus chiefly on the Tang and Song periods, I will expand the scope of my analysis from materials that have always been viewed as key to include, for example, the Shige standards for poetic writing and Shuyi, a guide to letter-writing discovered at Dunhuang.  In the process of this research, I expect it will prove necessary to use documents preserved in Japan or Japanese editions of classical texts.  Through consideration of these texts, I hope to elucidate which ideas, methods, and terminological aspects of literary theory and criticism changed and which were preserved during the “Tang-Song transformation,” one of the most significant periods of upheaval in Chinese history.
