Chinese Islam
I will explore how Chinese-speaking Muslims have built bridges between Islamic and Chinese civilization in order to adapt and survive in the non-Islamic world of China. How have they harmonized Islam and Chinese thought (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism) since the first major flowering of Chinese Islamic thought in the seventeenth century? How have they dealt with the rise of Chinese nationalism and the flourishing of Islamic reformism in West and South Asia since the nineteenth century? What were the circumstances in Eurasia as a whole around the sixteenth century that resulted in Chinese-speaking Muslims' taking root in China? By researching these and other questions, I hope to find clues to exploring various larger issues, including minority survival strategies, negotiations between cultures and dialogue between civilizations, diversity in Islam, and plurality in China.
