Life sciences and “nature” in East Asia
My research seeks to examine life sciences and “nature” in East Asia through the lenses of environmental history and the history of science. Beginning in the latter half of the nineteenth century, nation-states established scientific research institutions and remade, collected, or protected “nature” through life sciences such as zoology, botany, and agricultural sciences. In this research project, by closely reading East Asian modernity from the interactions of science, nature, and society, I intend to offer a perspective for considering contemporary natural conservation policy and environmental ethics.
