The Self, Feeling and Truth in France under the “Ancien Regime”

The purpose of my research is to study the notion of self (le «moi»), feeling (le «sentiment») and truth (la «vérité») through the analyze of the literary and philosophical texts in the Eighteenth century, which is known as the Epoch of «Ancien Régime».
It is known that the notion of Self is elaborated by modern philosophy.  In his work entitled “The Confessions” («Les Confessions»), which is considered as the origin of autobiographical literature in modern Europe, Jean-Jacques Rousseau strives to describe what he feels and to show them to the readers as his truth.  In the Nineteenth century, the Romantic authors follow Rousseau and privilege the representation of the inner self.  How did the authors before the French Revolution try to convey what they felt to their readers?  How can the internal and personal truth (which is invented by the authors like Rousseau) be communicable in their works?  How did the literature develop the notion of self originally rooted in philosophy? My goal is to answer these questions.
