Cultural-historical study of the modern Japanese emperor system

Cultural-historical study of the modern Japanese emperor system I intend to study the differences between the emperor system as it existed in the early modern and modern periods, considering a range of cultural elements related to the system, including imperial rituals like the Ritual of Accession, the daijōsai, funerary rites, the Aoi Festival and the Ritual of the New Year; and cultural elements like historic sites, national treasures, and museums.  As a starting point, my research will examine “ancient capitals in the modern era” in terms of the politics and culture of the emperor system.  I will explore the process through which Nara and Kyoto were constituted as “ancient capitals,” with reference to Japanese art history, Imperial Household treasures like imperial possessions and mausoleums; tours of ancient temples, school excursion, and expositions; and the state of temples and shrines, considering both continuities and disjunctions with the premodern period.
