Modern Japanese art and the West
I will explore the relationship between Japanese art and the West from the latter half of the Meiji Era into the Taisho Era (roughly 1880 to 1920) from the standpoint of reception and exchange. My research will focus in particular on 1880s Paris as a site for artistic meetings between East and West, surveying and researching the creative situation of Japanese painter Yamamoto Hōsui during his studies in France and his works after returning to Japan, and considering Japanese art policy with respect to the West during this period, chiefly through the thought and activities of figures like Okakura Tenshin and Kuroda Seiki.
