Politics and Institutions in Premodern Korea
If we consider the history of premodern Korea as the history of the development of despotism, how can we describe the relationship between the ruler and the officials who formed the bureaucracy?
What changes can be seen in the status and social composition of the aristocracy and the official class?
In this study, I will consider the transition of dynastic power from the Goryeo Dynasty to the Joseon Dynasty as a period of change from the medieval to the early modern period in Joseon history, and examine how the relationship between the ruler and the officials changed during these periods.
In particular, I will examine the personnel and document management systems that supported the operation of the bureaucracy, the system of punishment and discipline for the illegal acts of bureaucrats, and the military system that defended the state and the ruler.
In this way, I will shed light on the social status of the official aristocrats, or yangbans, in premodern Korea.
