The Acceptance of Chinese Operas and Novels in Japan since the Early Modern Period

Chinese literature has been accepted in Japan for a long time, and studies on such acceptance have been conducted since an early time.  The research so far has elucidated the influence of Chinese literature on its Japanese counterpart to some extent.  However, the “reading” or “using” of Chinese literature that does not necessarily lead to the creation of new literary works may have often been overlooked.  To clarify the acceptance of Chinese operas and novels in Japan, this study considers the act of reading as a part of the history of acceptance, focuses on how literary works were read and investigates the descriptions about Chinese operas and novels in Japanese documents since the early modern period.  By adopting this approach, the study aims to reconstruct the history of the acceptance of Chinese literature in Japan in a multifaceted manner.
